<rubenwardy> Hey, I suggest a "How to make a server" summary page that lists the options available and their costs (Self hosting locally, VPS, SaaS, etc) |
| 11:44 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> i assume this is inspired by #general, not sure how much you want to chase low common sense via documentation |
| 11:46 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> regardless, should probably link to some server providers rather than costs in the page correctly since the cost varies |
| 11:58 |
MTDiscord |
<rubenwardy> it's a very common question. And we could link to some server providers as well |
| 11:58 |
MTDiscord |
<rubenwardy> replace costs with pros/cons |

<crazyr.> Might be worth explaining that some "basic knowledge" is needed and maybe some pointers on where they can learn this "basic knowledge".... for example. I might be mistaken but that conversation in general appears to most likley be a port forwarding issue... I'm sure most people that want to start a server but don't have the experience run into these issues regularly. |

<crazyr.> I never needed to look into that but I gues if its there already then you cant help people that dont want to help them selves? idk |
| 12:04 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> im not saying it cant be improved (probably can use it), but just > not sure how much you want to chase low common sense via documentation |

<wsor4035> > options available and their costs (Self hosting locally, VPS, SaaS, etc) https://docs.luanti.org/for-server-hosts/setup/#choosing-hardware could probably be expanded with a chart |

MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> rough spitballing in vscode. the current choosing hardware section gets relabled to choosing a platform, and a new choosing hardware section is made with actual hardware |

<wsor4035> might make the cpu section have a speed up mapgen 4 cores recommended while disclosing a link to the multithreaded mapgen bug issue |
| 15:13 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> @bastrabun as a subject matter expert, any thoughts? |
| 15:24 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> . completely unrelated to anything, netcup is the first paying anubis customer ive seen 🤔 |
| 15:24 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> at least i assume since it looked familar but had there logo |
| 15:38 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> > It's recommended that you use a VPS or dedicated server to host...... feels like its kneecaps the chart further down |
| 15:43 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> a more "polished" version ||as if anything i do is polished when it comes to writing|| |

<.zenonseth> dumbass question, what's "around/ex" mean ? |
| 15:47 |
MTDiscord |
<.zenonseth> oh wait is it "around / ex-office hardware? |
| 15:47 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> yeah |
| 15:47 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> or use your ex  |
| 15:48 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> from texas |
| 15:48 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> sorry |
| 15:48 |
MTDiscord |
<.zenonseth> note to self: get a partner from texas then break up with them - is required for self-hosting luanti servers |
| 15:49 |

<wsor4035> anything else you want to look at before i merge send it into the sun? https://github.com/luanti-org/docs.luanti.org/pull/354 |

<wsor4035> tested locally and it works? |

<.zenonseth> it is now |

<bastrabun> Which one do you want me to comment on? num_emerge_threads? hardware stats? Regardless, here's my input. Sorry, it's a lot, that's why it had to become a paste: https://paste.your-land.de/?53dfca7dc32603c5#Cf6UXM8fW73rsLxTcPcwe5sfppYLaJ9YCKcCsfaXCkTv |
| 23:02 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> If you specifically want input on the article posted above, I'd also add the "How technical am I" dimension when deciding on how to host |
| 23:03 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> interesting, with your feedback i might put a second tier numbers. whats yourlands average player count these days? |
| 23:04 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> but will do this .....at some point.... since doing #luanti-devex-irc stuff |
| 23:04 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> in the chart? |
| 23:06 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> or imo i should turn it into a table as well |
| 23:07 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> Player numbers follow the european/american timezone chart, at "night" we have between 10 to 15, at day between 30 and 40. If you want, I can read out more numbers and you should also have a link to our prometheus |
| 23:08 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> so average ~35 ish |
| 23:08 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> maybe i should lower the current example from 10 to 5 |
| 23:08 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> probably more realistic for friend groups and most servers on the list if there lucky |
| 23:10 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> IMO it largely depends on the use case and the technicality of the person. One without any technical knowledge can't expect to open a client, put a bunch of mods, check the "server" box and somehow run something like YL. |
| 23:12 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> Self hosting and renting a server both requires server knowledge. In the former case if something goes wrong, the home network may be affected. The "bunch of friends want to check out Minetest for an afternoon" tier is pretty much impossible. |
| 23:14 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> yeah, im assuming or rather hoping for some minimal bar of intellegence when reading the docs..... |
| 23:15 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> you in your notes bring up a good point about db usage. not sure atm how to spin that nicely into hardware specs |
| 23:16 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> Not sure if you already read the paste, but ... the second migration (contabo -> contabo) was triggered by heavy lags in YL. turns out, it wasn't hardware, but a missing index on the database. We had that issue for about a year - that's why I think I'm not allowed to talk about intelligence 😄 |
| 23:18 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> for context, im refering to someone who followed up questions with Someone tell me please, Tell me it is pleeeeease. so i think your good 😛 |
| 23:19 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> maybe just a db column in the matrix that says free on the first tier? dunno |
| 23:19 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> That's what I was pointing at. We're targeting the "Alias does Alias stuff" tier and even there Alias fails. The "tell me please tier" has pretty much zero chance |
| 23:20 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> Not every server will have the same growth rate. Maybe it's a good idea to take a survey among servers rather than rely on a single datapoint? |
| 23:22 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> I made it appear as if DB size was a function of the time, while actually it depends on "played time". Creative servers may also have different stats |
| 23:22 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> i would assume a mineclone server would just catch fire vs you ofc |
| 23:22 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> but you make a decent point for a not completely terrible codebase (im aware, mineclones are worse), and if im doing a chart, a 5 player vs 35 player makes a decent point |
| 23:25 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> We have somewhat extensive historical data, if you need any other readout, let me know 😛 YL is based on MTG, I have no experience with Voxellibre or Mineclonia. I would assume CTF-like or AES-like servers have a much different profile with the same player numbers. |
| 23:26 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> yeah, im targeting somewhat ok with some terrible code/perf. not exocitic/specific which is what ctf is, and not terrible code your cpu is constantly appoligizing for all the time (mineclones) |
| 23:26 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> (same offer for core devs. If they know what they want to know, I'll try to bring the data) |
| 23:28 |
MTDiscord |
<bastrabun> Hm. It's not that we don't have lags. |
| 23:29 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> i havent dealt with mineclones in a hot second. but i knew when you start getting multiple players they started collapsing under themselves. they also cant/used to not be able to run without gc64 |
