13:23 user333_ well um, this doesn't look right: https://x0.at/YDox.txt
13:24 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> that's not good. Not sure Luanti can save you against what looks like a bad disk though
13:24 BadGuyAlex yeah, what is this? Is it *actual* I/O error, or corrupted file system, or something else?
13:24 user333_ i have no idea
13:25 BadGuyAlex out of disk space? Though I think that would give different error message.
13:25 BadGuyAlex try to copy the database to some other place. Then do sqlite3 database.sqlite 'PRAGMA integrity_check'
13:25 user333_ i have plenty of disk space and the error message for that is "No space left on device"
13:26 user333_ i have ~/.minetest symlinked somewhere else so i can change that to test

13:40 user333_ ok, turning it off and on again fixed it.. for now
13:40 user333_ i'm going to back up the drive though
13:47 imi joined #luanti
13:53 heston76 user333_: https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm
14:00 user333_ i'm making a backup of it with dd, then i'l fill it with zeroes, then i'l restore the backup
14:12 BadGuyAlex also do an integrity check. SSD in my experience are fast, but garbage. They won't retain data for long. Worse, they may introduce silent errors, such that every time you read a big file from such disk, every time it comes out slightly differently (few bits flipped here and there).
14:15 SFENCE joined #luanti
14:16 MTDiscord <rollerozxa> "They won't retain data for long" is this really that big of an issue with SSDs as I keep hearing some people say?
14:18 MTDiscord <rollerozxa> (actually now that I think about it, it was a long time since I last heard something to the effect of "your SSD will basically become formatted if if your computer is unplugged for a week"... maybe their computers all just broke)
14:21 BadGuyAlex It won't get formatted within a week, but if you leave some data on it and won't touch it for months (doesn't equal you leave disk unpowered), the SSD might start corrupting data.
14:25 SFENCE joined #luanti
14:25 MTDiscord <rollerozxa> even if it's powered on?
14:28 MTDiscord <rollerozxa> I mean I do know that SSDs can in fact lose data when powered off. but the timespan for that is typically measured in years rather than weeks or months

14:36 BadGuyAlex I have one in TVR. I recorded few movies a couple of months ago. When I tried to back things up then check if I got all the data correctly, I found out that every time I read the original data, it's slighlty different than before.

21:32 MTDiscord <ruslan1> hello
21:34 MTDiscord <warr1024> For powered-off SSDs, you probably just want to power them on and read every bit about once a year just to be safe.
21:35 MTDiscord <warr1024> I've also heard people make a big deal about rewrite cycle limits.  I've used about 1% of the life of my SSD over the past 2 years, so I'm not that worried about it, though I guess my grandkids might have to.
21:36 user333_ the storage in question is a 128GB microSD in my laptop, so i should probably make backups more often
21:39 MTDiscord <warr1024> Haha, yeah, removable media like SD and USB sticks are actually way less reliable (or quality controlled) than a "proper SSD" actually, so yeah, good to be careful of those.
21:40 MTDiscord <warr1024> I've got this "high endurance" micro SD card for a fruit pi computer but I wouldn't trust it with anything critical.  Had a few of those crap out on me (though in some cases, it's actually the SD reader that craps out)
21:40 user333_ it's from a good brand at least, though running games off it probably wasn't a good idea
21:41 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> USB stick lost data me just yesterday. Unless that was using a faulty program poorly, maybe
21:42 user333_ i have some 4GB USB drives that corrupt all the time, i still use them for small file transfers though
21:42 MTDiscord <warr1024> Anyone remember floppy disks?  I used to put data on one, and then sprint to the other computer to put the disk in before the data had a chance to go bad.
21:42 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> someone needs to make a persian rug mod so the AI spammers will stop pretending they have one
21:43 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> my exposure to floppies is limited to there being a few around the house by the time I was old enough to understand. Don't think they even got used
21:43 user333_ i've seen only one in my humble 15 years of life
21:44 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> at this point, most of us have seen more save icons than real floppies
21:44 user333_ very true
21:44 MTDiscord <warr1024> I've seen hundreds of floppies, but even in my case, it just means I've seen way more save icons too
21:45 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> well we should only count unique save icons
21:46 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> the silk icons floppy has been re-used many times
21:46 MTDiscord <warr1024> Then we should only count unique floppies. If I buy a box of 50 disks from one company with 1 design, that's still 50 instances of 1 floppy.
21:46 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> hmm there's no "winning"
21:47 MTDiscord <warr1024> If you've ever actually tried to keep data on a floppy disk for a long time, can confirm, you do lose in the long run.
21:48 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> this sounds like a luanti mod opportunity
21:48 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> floppies with a simulation of bit rot
21:49 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> or how about a game where you're a bike courier in the big city and you need to drop off floppies before they corrupt
