it is not a matter that intrests me much. it would just be nice to point these players to a server that is more to their liking |

I should think about officially releasing my game soon as well (hmmmm: I'm kinda waiting for that 4096 limit to be lifted before I do, so I don't have to field any support issues related to it) |

There are no examples and none of the methods make sense |

minetest.read_from_map crashes the engine |

| 12:29 |
Taoki |
W(hy)TF does this crash Minetest? In PilzAdam's nether mod that's how get_data is used |
| 12:29 |
kaeza |
are you sure the passed positions are actual positions? |
| 12:29 |
kaeza |
(i.e. not nil) |
| 12:29 |
Taoki |
sure, they're vector positions |
| 12:29 |
Taoki |
Tables with an x, y and z |
| 12:30 |
Taoki |
Like all positions in Lua |
| 12:30 |
Taoki |
"attempt to call field 'get_data' (a nil value)" - lol wut? It is documented even |
| 12:30 |
kaeza |
can you provide more context? |
| 12:31 |
kaeza |
ah |
| 12:31 |
Taoki |
Using either : or . causes the same thing |
| 12:32 |
kaeza |
... |
| 12:33 |
Taoki |
? |
| 12:33 |
kaeza |
[09:28:12] <Taoki> local vm = VoxelManip():read_from_map(pos_start, pos_end) |
| 12:33 |
Taoki |
Like I said, there are no examples and documantation is dull in explaining usage. No idea what is wrong in that |
| 12:34 |
kaeza |
you are returning wrong object |
| 12:34 |
Taoki |
(the nether mod doesn't use read_from_map) |
| 12:34 |
Taoki |
What's the correct way? |
| 12:34 |
kaeza |
you are assigning the result from read_from_map() to "vm" |
| 12:34 |
kaeza |
vm should be the VoxelManip object |
| 12:35 |
kaeza |
so "local vm = VoxelManip()" |
| 12:35 |
Taoki |
ok. Then I run read_from_map on top of that, then get_data on top of that result? |
| 12:35 |
kaeza |
...no |
| 12:35 |
kaeza |
get_data is a method of VoxelManip |
| 12:35 |
kaeza |
(as well as read_from_map) |
| 12:36 |
Taoki |
so I do vm.get_data? |
| 12:36 |
kaeza |
I'm not very vamiliar with VM, but I assume read_from_map() is used to "emerge" the blocks |
| 12:37 |
kaeza |
to get actual node data you use get_data() |
| 12:37 |
Taoki |
You said it's a method of voxelmanip though. So hoiw do I call it? I just write get_data() or vm.get_data()?\ |
| 12:38 |
* Taoki |
is familiar with the Lua API but doesn't understand thos whole mixup |
| 12:38 |
kaeza |
so "local vm = VoxelManip(); vm:read_from_map(minp, maxp); local data = vm:get_data() |
| 12:38 |
Taoki |
Ahh, that way. Thanks, will try it out |
| 12:39 |
Taoki |
I understand what it does now. read_drom_map doesn't return anything, just sets the VM I spawned |
| 12:39 |
kaeza |
it actually returns some values |

still working on your villages I see |

kaeza |
that would be a great addition |
| 12:43 |
Taoki |
Yes, improving the clear function. They already use schematics as of yesterday, now that hmmm fixed the facedirs |
| 12:45 |
Taoki |
Strange though. Even after I do vm:read_from_map(pos_start, pos_end), the VM affects blocks outside of this range |
| 12:45 |
Taoki |
As in, not in the box specified by pos_start and pos_end |
| 12:45 |
Taoki |
I need it to clear everything in this area (set it to air). Just a sec actually... |
| 12:45 |
kaeza |
ah then the return values of read_from_map() are used I guess :P |
| 12:46 |
Taoki |
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=Anpnb5EG What's wrong in this? And why does it clear outside of the given function instead? |
| 12:47 |
kaeza |
think of it like this: you pass the area you want to modify to read_from_map(), and it returns *whole mapblocks* |
| 12:47 |
kaeza |
so you must "offset" your positions into the data[] array |
| 12:49 |
Taoki |
But I already give the area to the read_from_map function. What's it used for if it still returns anything else? |
| 12:50 |
kaeza |
ah I see |
| 12:50 |
kaeza |
your code is setting *every element* in the data[] array to air |
| 12:51 |
|
tele joined #minetest |

Taoki |
Sure. But I thought the data array only contains what I set from read_from_map |
| 12:51 |
kaeza |
the problem is, data contains the whole mapblocks (not just the area you want to modify) |
| 12:52 |
Taoki |
Yeah... it's a problem then. How to loop only through the elements in that range |
| 12:52 |
Taoki |
Instead of for i, d in ipairs(data) do |
| 12:54 |
Taoki |
Ah no... I probably can't limit the loop. Instead I think I need to filter the positions themselves |

For anyone interested in my structures / towns mod: Thanks to hmmmm fixing schematic facedir and PilzAdam's help with the furnace crash, the mod is now switched to use schematic + voxelmanip support. This will allow for much bigger towns which are less resource intensive to build, and remove malformed (incomplete) building spawns |
| 20:38 |
Taoki |
So if anyone has the mod or is interested, it's safer and better to get it now / should be updated to this |

Oh, I sort of forgot to ask. Was the multiple material issue with models fixed? Some people reported that it didn't work, even if I meant it to when I added model support |
| 21:52 |
Taoki |
Like if a mesh has several segments, ability to texture each ones individually |
| 21:52 |
Taoki |
*multiple materials |
| 21:52 |
PilzAdam |
it turned out that not the patch but the model that was broken due to it was wrong |
| 21:53 |
PilzAdam |
so we need to re-merge that patch |
| 21:53 |
Taoki |
Ah. So if the model is done properly it should work now yes? |
| 21:53 |
Taoki |
Ah, not merged yet. Ok |
| 21:54 |
Taoki |
If the model was the issue then yeah, please re-merge it when you get to it |

My apologies for interjecting, where in minetest.net forums is the setting to change the language preference? I haven't been able to locate it in my profile settings. |

Anyone know if <0.4.6 "/clearobjects" removes dropped items before the server crashes? |
| 23:39 |
LazyJ |
Will successive attempts eventually accomplish the task? |
| 23:40 |
PilzAdam |
depends on the mapsize |
| 23:40 |
PilzAdam |
its not really predictable |
| 23:42 |
LazyJ |
The current map size is 2.7gb |
| 23:42 |
LazyJ |
We are experiencing odd, vertical columns of dropped items appearing above ground and embedded below ground. |
| 23:43 |
LazyJ |
Sokomine told me about turning off F4 and coming back to a place to see the dropped items. |
| 23:43 |
LazyJ |
Quite prolific in some areas. |
| 23:44 |
LazyJ |
The server admin has indicated that an upgrade to 0.4.7 is not likely. |

Yeah, so that's why I'm trying to figure out how to work with the tools I'm given. |
| 23:51 |
sokomine |
kahrl did take a look at those columns yesterday |
| 23:51 |
sokomine |
the method to identify these colums was described to me by pilzadam :- |
| 23:51 |
sokomine |
:-) |
| 23:52 |
sokomine |
updating might be the best idea. at least eventually |
| 23:52 |
LazyJ |
Agreed, but that's out of my hands. |
| 23:54 |
LazyJ |
Now I'm wondering if it would have been best not to install any mods at all. |
| 23:54 |
PilzAdam |
no, that wouldnt help |
| 23:54 |
sokomine |
no. without mods, the game's not that great |
| 23:55 |
LazyJ |
Aye. But then perhaps he wouldn't be so reluctant to upgrade the server. |
| 23:55 |
sokomine |
i hope the bug can be fixed. kahrl did take a look at it, and i hope it gives him an idea what the bug is |
| 23:55 |
LazyJ |
We probably wouldn't have too many players either. Oy... |
| 23:56 |
LazyJ |
Ah, I'm just griping some old frustration. |
| 23:56 |
sokomine |
oh. don't be frustrated. most things do get better |
| 23:56 |
LazyJ |
Yesterday I loaded up the old .0.4.4 world. |
| 23:57 |
LazyJ |
We were told that the database was incompatible with 0.4.6so that world had to be scrapped. |
| 23:57 |
sokomine |
between 0.4.4 and 0.4.7? don't think so |
| 23:57 |
LazyJ |
Turns out, after I edited the world.mt file and put the mods in the mod folder as a modpack, things worked. |
| 23:57 |
sokomine |
maybe between older 0.3er versions |
| 23:58 |
sokomine |
indidivual mods may cause unknown blocks because the mod or the name of objects changed, but that's usually not such a big problem |
| 23:58 |
sokomine |
how large was the old world? |
| 23:59 |

I'd experienced a bit of a mess during the transition after Calinou merged the stairs+ into moreblocks and then some of those blocks were incorporated into the default game. |
| 23:59 |
LazyJ |
These were just in my singleplayer worlds, small by comparison to the server world. |
