05:56 lissobone nubetest
05:57 lissobone Greetings.
05:57 lissobone I have been fighting demons in Hell until now.
05:58 DeepThgt hello lissobone
05:58 DeepThgt how are you
05:58 lissobone I am approximately alright precisely as of now.
05:58 DeepThgt good
06:01 lissobone Exactly in 5 minutes 22 seconds 98 nanosecods I will not be alright like I am now.  By then I will have already commited multiple felonies on copyright ground.
06:01 DeepThgt lol I do this daily
06:01 lissobone How do you manage to do this daily?
06:01 DeepThgt seeding
06:01 lissobone And sharing the software?
06:01 Blockhead256[m] there's a lot of linux ISOs to be seeding :)
06:01 DeepThgt all kinds of media
06:02 lissobone GNU/Linux would be more correct, unless all bootable images contain no GNU software at all, which is very unlikely.
06:03 Blockhead256[m] some of them are alpine :P
06:03 lissobone True.
06:03 lissobone But does the presence of Alpine invalidate GNU?
06:03 lissobone Neither does GNU invalidate the presence of the first.
06:03 Blockhead256[m] GNU, Linux, and BSD ISOs
06:04 loliglitch joined #minetest
06:05 lissobone You may just say "free system ISOs", since all of them are free as in freedom (not as in price), or at least are comprised of mostly free software.
06:05 lissobone They're free, but most contain some nonfree software.  It's a stretch.
06:05 Blockhead256[m] debian stretch was EOL 2020-07-06 :P
06:07 lissobone No, not as in debian stretch, but as in a term which definition does not fully match with what it's applied to.
06:08 Blockhead256[m] okay since you're so passionate
06:08 Blockhead256[m] which is more free: permissive or copyleft licenses?
06:08 lissobone Collectively calling all such seeded distributions "linux" disregards, first of all, GNU, since GNU is the system while linux is the kernel, and BSD, which have nothing to do with neither GNU nor linux.
06:08 lissobone Well...
06:08 lissobone Depends on how you define freedom.
06:08 lissobone But there is an official definition already.
06:09 Blockhead256[m] well, who will we ask? The FSF or the OSI?
06:09 lissobone Free software grants user four freedoms: freedom to execute the program for any purpose, freedom to modify and study it, distribute verbatim and modified copies.
06:11 lissobone There's a list of free licenses, as I recall, on the FSF website.  GNU GPL is a strong copyleft license and it imposes some restrictions, but those restrictions are designed to prohibit acts a good citizen would not like to do.
06:11 lissobone You can, of course, say, that MIT, BSD or other permissive (pushover) are freer, since they allow to do more with the program.
06:12 lissobone (There's no comma after say).
06:13 lissobone But they have a flaw, and that's allowing to relicense the software under a different, often nonfree license.
06:14 Blockhead256[m] aha, a straight answer
06:14 Blockhead256[m] yeah personally I like the AGPL for Minetest mods
06:15 lissobone Since they're often used on servers, aren't they?
06:15 Blockhead256[m] right, so the additional clauses of the Affero part require people who run a server with modified versions of AGPL mods must publish their modifications
06:16 lissobone I don't think that it's hard to run an extra FTP or HTTP server along with minetest.
06:17 Blockhead256[m] right, even I have an HTTP server along with minetestserver on the same VPS

09:42 lissobone Greetings.

11:43 Blockhead256[m] Would you all recommend mobs_animal or animalia for a new world? Is it going to be hard to fix if i already generated a lot of the world to switch to animalia?
11:58 calcul0n you'll probably get a lot of unknown items, and maybe some unknown nodes
11:58 calcul0n it's annoying but the map should still be playable
11:59 Blockhead256[m] the important thing is: how can I make sure mobs spawn in the old areas?
12:00 calcul0n mob spawn is not related to mapgen, it only depends on things like altitude and node types
12:00 Blockhead256[m] okay and will animalia be compatible with cooking recipes from farming_redo/undo?
12:01 calcul0n no idea, i only know mobs_animal
12:02 Blockhead256[m] ok well thanks for your input
12:02 calcul0n i'd say the best is to try them both and see what you prefer
12:03 Blockhead256[m] well I'm going to be running a server so if one of them performs better I'd rather use it

15:12 schubisu Blockhead256[m]: asking myself very similar questions. Let me know when you find out more ;)
15:23 DeepThgt i have only used mobs_redo, its pretty conservative with resources at default settings
15:24 calcul0n also note that you can use both mods together
15:25 calcul0n i don't like to have such redundant stuff but some people don't care
15:25 Blockhead256[m] it would be a bit odd to get two cows that can't interbreed
15:26 calcul0n indeed :)
15:26 calcul0n with a bit of rp you can pretend they are different species

15:38 independent56 I have a crazy idea; earth in Minetest
15:38 independent56 to scale
15:38 independent56 Every 60 km^2 square of the world has its own server
15:38 Blockhead256[m] you'd need minetest32
15:39 independent56 Generated by Perl, every server exists together
15:41 Blockhead256[m] federated Minetest has been postulated
15:41 independent56 ?
15:41 Blockhead256[m] there would be an advantage compared to a flat world though, so you could slice squares off the surface of the sphere (geoid) instead of one big flat earth
15:42 Blockhead256[m] federated Minetest meaning features for letting a Minetest client navigate between different servers that have agreed to share player data
15:42 mrkubax10 interesting idea
15:42 independent56 I have an even worse idea: would i be allowed to spoof the existence of the server to servers.minetest.net and by emailing my server 5 minutes in advance with the server you would like to oin, it spins up the server and you can join it
15:42 independent56 That would be a good idea; federated minetest#
15:43 Blockhead256[m] you can run own list instead: https://github.com/minetest/serverlist/
15:43 independent56 I can imagine a group of servers making the "Minetest Union" and having a "schengen area"
15:43 independent56 But yeah, running my own server list would be intresting
15:43 independent56 Maybe i send existance data to both
15:44 DeepThgt it would lead to an odd play experience, as inventory would be diff between worlds
15:44 independent56 Would it be against the server.minetest.net rules to run that many servers?
15:45 Trifton joined #minetest
15:45 Blockhead256[m] deja vu except it was a different person asking
15:45 independent56 it would be about (7.48 * (10 ^ 7)) / 60, or 1246666.66667
15:46 independent56 different server
15:46 Blockhead256[m] the answer I recall back then was -  rules aren't hard and fast, but if you cause too much load for the server you can be barred/banned
15:46 independent56 I'll probably never go do it
15:46 independent56 So i run my own server list, put all the worlds there, and then set up an email service to respond to server run requests
15:46 independent56 With captachs to prevent bots
15:47 Blockhead256[m] also where do you get metre accurate GIS data?
15:47 independent56 The servers only capture the scale of earth and not the actual physical of it
15:47 independent56 Maybe later on i make the server follow google data
15:48 independent56 I guess i'll make my own server system
15:49 independent56 Here's what happens when a client joins the server > Spawns at point null > Moves out of the server > Automatically reconnected to a different server to continue play
15:50 independent56 And then you might even end up in Africa
15:50 Blockhead256[m] it is always easiest to prototype with existing technology
15:50 Blockhead256[m] .. or the middle of the south atlantic
15:51 independent56 I might even make my custom client which is dumbed down and only allows joining the server
15:52 independent56 But the co-ordinates are IRL co-ordinates
15:52 independent56 Even crazier idea:
15:53 independent56 A IRL robot takes a video and streams it to the client and allows you to move around earth in real life from Minetest
15:53 independent56 Using sattelites i launched into space
15:53 independent56 To help me keep it connected to the server
15:54 independent56 What do you think?
15:54 independent56 Would it cause chaos if i released it in Germany?
16:01 independent56 In fact, we don't even need minetest for this.
16:01 independent56 Just a small web interface to control the bot
16:03 independent56 I can even add a speaker and laser gun which people can also control remotely
16:12 proller use https://github.com/minetest/minetest/pull/12142 and serve whole world from one server
16:20 independent56 Good idea
16:21 independent56 But i like my solution more because more 56independent.github.io/portfolio credit lol
