<wsor4035> 👆 and also point them onto installing mods |

<wsor4035> ive had some more thoughts about setup. 99% of people are going to be doing this on linux, so via a plugin or something, what if we had details element that are default open for linux bits, and default closed for windows bits |
| 17:33 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> alternative is making the current one a router page with each os being its own subpage |
| 17:34 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> it might actually be better to do that |
| 17:35 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> @mark.wiemer since you orginally did the menu/nesting jazz, and objections to for-server-hosts/setup/ being a landing page and then linking to for-server-hosts/setup/windows, for-server-hosts/setup/linux, for-server-hosts/setup/truenas, etc for example? |
| 17:36 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> also cc @rollerozxa as your the orginal author iirc? |

<rollerozxa> yes splitting the page up in some form would probably be good. it's quite long at this point |
| 17:42 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> if splitting it up, the only part im semi concerned about is external-and-internal-ips since it does have some per platofrm stuff, but also most sane people on vps arent going to care |
| 17:43 |
MTDiscord |
<rollerozxa> yeah I assume we're gonna split it up into one for linux that assumes a cloud server in a datacenter, and one for windows that assumes a residential internet connection |
| 17:44 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> i mean, i guess there isnt a reason that we couldn't just move the ip stuff to for-server-hosts/what-is-my-ip or something and have it on the router page |
| 17:44 |
MTDiscord |
<rollerozxa> yes, that would be useful |
| 17:44 |
MTDiscord |
<rollerozxa> also for the CGNAT checking stuff |
| 17:45 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> yeah, overarching i kinda want to make setting up a server a more "guided" process for dummies |
| 17:45 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> and part of that is being able to skip unrelatedto you parts so that you dont get confused |
| 17:47 |
MTDiscord |
<rollerozxa> yeah |
| 17:47 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> i wonder if we should have a installing mods for server hosts article |
| 17:48 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> but to that would probably need to strip some of the more technical stuff out of the for players. which might make sense and could link to the new one saying for technical/more details, see .... but the installing mods for players be more a gui /mods only thing |
| 17:49 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> i think thats a future issue, and to just link to the existing one for now as to not make one huge change at once |

"with each os being its own subpage" you'd then have to remember to update all of them, whereas having it in the same paragraph or chapter would make it more obvious on what needs to be changed. (since it's all together) |
| 21:04 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> everything is tradeoffs |
| 21:04 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> and the idea of a landing page is that most of the common stuff is all there negating that |
| 21:05 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> while the subpages are for specific to that platform |
| 21:05 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> and are for the various sections losely grouped to headers anyways |
| 21:06 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> also ironically we call out macos for one minor thing in the page atm, but then nothing else |
| 21:07 |
Krock |
Side thought: Aren't there also servers running in Docker? It seems to me that a link to https://github.com/luanti-org/luanti/blob/master/doc/docker_server.md is missing somewhere in that region. |
| 21:07 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> yes, and docker could be its own "platform" |
| 21:07 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> already thought about it some even if i didnt post here on it |
| 21:08 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> (edit to "platform" subpage - since irc is stuck in the dark ages) |
| 21:09 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> tho it is a bit of a mess since docker technically runs on the other platforms, but if its kept to the docker bits than should be fine |
| 21:09 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> at least for now, docker is just running on a linux vm on all platforms, tho that might change in the future with apples containers |
| 21:10 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> but im going offtopic |
| 21:10 |
Krock |
and I presume your ping was in regard to my comment on your PR? I gather from it that the page would likely undergo refactoring. |
| 21:10 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> yes, the 3 lines above specifically - but note thats more of a phase 2 to server page improvements than a part of it |
| 21:11 |
Krock |
alright. Thanks. |
| 21:11 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> to expand, i was thinking more of promoting the worldmods to server people, but then it gets dicy because users may be interested in worldmods as a part of packaging a all in one world to share with others |
| 21:12 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> avoid duplicating information and such |
| 21:12 |
Krock |
I think it would be best to show up a few options, and then let the user decide on what they want in the end. There's no single solution that works for everyone. |
| 21:12 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> but if making the install a server page more of a complete experience/guide, we would want to point them to something for setting up games/mods, but gui stuff is all irellevant to server people whereas gui is highly for users |
| 21:17 |
Krock |
"setting up games/mods" is again a topic that could either be split into two (server | GUI) or kept in one page (separate headings). The "one page" approach could help tech-savvy people to understand what's happening under the hood, whereas the server part would only confuse regular users. Well idk. |
| 21:22 |
Krock |
Ah. Your edited message did not show up on my end. That explains things. |
| 21:24 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> anyways, what we are discussing is more a phase 2, havent really come to any firm ideas/silver bullets. for now phase 1 which ill probably do tonight is more so per platform subpages and maybe shilling remote media/placeholder link to players mod page |
| 21:26 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> mostly making a point of remote media since luantis network transfer for media is trash |
| 21:26 |
MTDiscord |
<wsor4035> (reference to previous ctf discussion in general for the discord users) |
