<prounce> no they just need to aim for 10x the fps they want the average user to get |

<prounce> I get over 1400 fps in minecraft with a fairly mid range build |

!tell ireallyhateirc try to isolate the condition that causes the problem: try it with a dummy backend / the world in RAM, try it on a LAN server, try it with an empty minetest.conf, etc. |

sfan5: In plain MTG with a brand-new world with nothing in it it's fine, but once you add mods and a few buildings it's a pretty bad experience for anyone on lower-end hardware (which seems to be most players) unless they turn the view range down. |
09:11 |
cheapie |
Which might not seem like a big deal, but most of the players I talk to are seemingly unaware they even *can* turn it down |
09:14 |
sfan5 |
you can't do it without leaving the game in android for one (afaik) |
09:19 |
sfan5 |
it heavily depends on what kind of building. if it's in the style of VE-Creative's spawn area then yeah that's no surprise. |
09:20 |
sfan5 |
sure the engine should be rendering it more efficiently, but it currently doesn't and I think that's more of an extreme case |
09:23 |
cheapie |
Yeah, VE-C is a bit extreme, I still see the same issues elsewhere though, just less so |
09:23 |
sfan5 |
where is "elsewhere"? |
09:23 |
cheapie |
Other servers |
09:24 |
cheapie |
(like, every other server I've been on, except the ones with nothing built) |

sfan5, I'll try this. In fact a my base settings I usually use make the lags more apparent. I switched to default settings in hope that someone would reproduce it easily but nah. |
14:34 |

I'd like to hear more about dummy backend, as for world in RAM I guess I'll read about making RAM disks |
14:56 |
|
fluxionary joined #luanti |
14:58 |
sfan5 |
dummy backend is "keep the world database in ram, it gets lost on exit" |
14:59 |
sfan5 |
ramdisk is mount - /some/path -t tmpfs |
14:59 |
sfan5 |
on some distros /tmp itself is a tmpfs |

<Blockhead256> I've heard that when you have spare memory Linux will put disk blocks in cache |
15:26 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> this is not that efficient in the end because the blocks are compressed and need to go through compression/decompression between memory and storage |
15:26 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> I suppose that Redis helps with this? |
15:26 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> *the Luanti mapblocks are compressed |
15:28 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> that is, would Redis be a better improvement than putting sqlite on tmpfs? |
15:37 |
sfan5 |
since in this case we just want to test there's no point in using redis |
15:37 |
sfan5 |
I also don't think the linux disk caching behavior is related here |
15:44 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> true, what I've asked is not really helpful to troubleshooting |

Ok so small update: these lags are several times more frequent while in a boat compared to just flying |
16:46 |
ireallyhateirc |
which is interesting because flying is 2-3 times faster and so it means more blocks generated |
