just caught up with the backlog and I have to say to celeron: you seem to have some misconceptions about IRC. IRC servers can (an probably do) log user messages, including PMs. The only thing in that may escape surveillance by a server owner is DCC chat, which rarely works nowadays anyway unless purposefully set up. What's nice about IRC is that "probably libera.chat is not evil", and that being a standard protocol, you have other server options if you |
15:47 |
pgimeno |
lose trust in one (like what happened with FreeNode). |
15:48 |
pgimeno |
The only thing in that -> -in |
15:49 |
celeron55 |
the server can log the messages, that's obvious. but they really have no reason to do so. they can't use the messages for their gain because users would absolutely riot if they did that. an irc server is, as the name says, only a relay, not a database |
15:51 |
pgimeno |
I bet there is logging - that's how they can investigate incidents, among other things. I doubt there would be any riot if that's found out, especially looking at how many people are happy using discord/whatsapp/etc. |

having some history for moderation of course makes sense and everyone likes effective moderation. but storing them for years would be liability. i wouldn't, if i ran a server which hosts a protocol that technically allows deleting history without affecting users |

IIRC a while ago when there was a spambot wave Libera specifically announced that they would apply automated filters to certain PMs sent on IRC, which implies they weren't doing any filtering or storage before |
15:56 |
sfan5 |
no way to confirm this of course |
15:56 |
sfan5 |
but the liability argument holds a lot of value |
16:23 |
Ingar |
than there was this IRC server owner who patched it to dump all private messages in a channel |

Last I heard, Libera chat network policy was that publicly logged channels should include a note about being publicly logged in the /topic message. |
21:01 |
jonadab |
But I don't know how rigorously that's enforced. |
21:01 |
jonadab |
More of a "this is what you _should_ do" guideline, I think. |
21:03 |
jonadab |
Anyway, if you're sufficiently technically inclined to be paranoid about data security, you should assume that some of the users in the channel probably have private logs, and you don't know how careful they are about keeping them private. |
22:02 |
MTDiscord |
<theidealist> of course for these channels the whole thing is publicly logged on discord |

sfan5: FWIW I've been told it's possible to opt out of that filtering by setting user mode +u (on the receiving end). Of course I can't confirm that that works either. |
