<Blockhead256> user333_: they don't update to new versions within a Debian stable release, that's what the stable means. That makes it fine if you want to run a server for a few years, then move to a later version (often not the actual latest...) when a new stable relases. |
| 02:15 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> so again, it's not good for the desktop (but see flatpak, compile from source as options) but it's good for "I want to run a Luanti server for years and the only maintenance is occasional security updates" |
| 02:15 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> that works better for something like Apache or nginx more than Luanti, but that's the idea |
| 02:16 |
user333_ |
yea, i use debian/ubuntu so i know the story |
| 02:17 |
user333_ |
and i always compile from source, never touching flatpaks again |
| 02:17 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> oh right.. of course |
| 02:17 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> "en ginks" |
| 02:18 |
user333_ |
that's why i was stuck on 5.6.1 for a while until i learned to compile |
| 02:18 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> Luanti could really do with a dedicated debian maintainer, it only occasionally gets attention to get security backports and push the latest stable to debian unstable |
| 02:20 |
user333_ |
debain trixie released in mid 2025 and shipped with 5.10, at that time the latest was probably 5.12 or 5.13 |
| 02:21 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> yep, and that highlights why having a maintainer is so important, they need to get the latest versions into unstable before the deadline for the freeze, or it will be very out of date instead of slightly |
| 02:22 |
user333_ |
at least it got a version after the minetest -> luanti rename |
| 02:23 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> anyway, be the change you want to see in the world, they say |
| 02:23 |

@Blockhead256 that's the theory but realistically debian (nor any other distro really) does not have the resources to ship security fixes |
| 08:14 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> well debian has shipped security updates for then-minetest before, but only after a huge lag |
| 08:17 |
sfan5 |
not to mention normal bug fixes they're technically supposed to backport too |
| 08:19 |
sfan5 |
this whole approach works best with an established and fixed purpose tool or system component, e.g. if I want my file gzipped then it doesn't matter if I use the gzip from 2015, 2020 or 2025, they all get the job done. but a game engine is an ever changing piece of software where having a version out of date by several years just makes a bad |

[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> could be sidestepped with a launcher.. I think distro-packaged veloren does that |
| 08:21 |
[MatrxMT] |
<Blockhead256> not that I want a luanti launcher of course. The game opening near-instantly is a great feature |
