crashing in on_deactivate caused entities to duplicate... I wonder what happens with GUID in that case |

Blockhead256: people should simply forbear to host luanti servers on pitiable hardware |
| 02:22 |
repetitivestrain |
the number of users who expect e.g. mineclonia to function on a Westmere or Sandy Bridge Xeon from the early 2010s just beggars belief |
| 02:22 |
repetitivestrain |
function well on, that is |
| 02:23 |
user333_ |
i ran a terrible local CTF server on an RPi1 |
| 02:23 |
user333_ |
like 3 minutes max lag iirc |
| 02:24 |
repetitivestrain |
that probably arose from constant swapping |
| 02:25 |
user333_ |
yeah, it had 512 MB of RAM and an 8GB swapfile |
| 02:26 |
user333_ |
my RPi5 could do a 3-player CTF server no problem, with a client running on it as well |
| 02:27 |
repetitivestrain |
how much ram has the rpi5 again |
| 02:27 |
user333_ |
depends on the model, 2-16GB of DDR4 |
| 02:28 |
repetitivestrain |
Mmf |
| 02:29 |
repetitivestrain |
but the processor is far more modern than the honestly pathetic hardware on which many people attempt to run mineclonia |
| 02:29 |
repetitivestrain |
for a single threaded game such as mineclonia is, any cheap laptop from 2016+ would serve them better than a Westmere xeon |
| 02:30 |
user333_ |
i should try mineclonia on my dual-core 1.4 GHz potato laptop :P |
| 02:30 |
repetitivestrain |
What's the cpu |
| 02:30 |
user333_ |
intel atom |
| 02:30 |
user333_ |
v e r y o l d |
| 02:30 |
repetitivestrain |
which atom though |
| 02:31 |
user333_ |
uhh... /me runs `cat /proc/cpuinfo` |
| 02:31 |
user333_ |
Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz |
| 02:31 |
user333_ |
nvm it was 1.6 GHz |
| 02:31 |
cheapie |
I should try with the array texture thing on this box sometime |
| 02:31 |
cheapie |
Client: HexChat 2.16.2 • OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (x64) • CPU: AMD GX-209JA SOC with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (1000MHz) • Memory: 1.8 GiB Total (116.4 MiB Free) • Storage: 142.6 GiB / 238.4 GiB (95.8 GiB Free) • VGA: AMD Radeon HD 8180 • Uptime: 18m 2s |
| 02:32 |
cheapie |
It does have OpenGL 3... actually 4 :P |
| 02:32 |
user333_ |
that's better than my RPi5 with opengl 3.1 |
| 02:32 |
user333_ |
and this potato with opengl 1.4 |
| 02:33 |
cheapie |
In Windows it does D3D12, in Linux it does (IIRC) OpenGL 4.6 and Vulkan 1.2, it's just all very slow and that CPU isn't helping matters |
| 02:33 |
repetitivestrain |
it's from 2009... |
| 02:33 |
repetitivestrain |
yeah, that won't be adequate at all |
| 02:33 |

2013 |
| 02:34 |
user333_ |
i have another old laptop motherboard here, 4 core unknown intel CPU from ~2011, 2.2 GHz and 16GB of DDR3 i upgraded |
| 02:34 |
cheapie |
It's just a /really/ low-end embedded part from 2013 |
| 02:34 |
cheapie |
Supposed to be a thin client |
| 02:35 |
user333_ |
how well does it run MT? |
| 02:35 |
cheapie |
Not very well :P |
| 02:35 |
user333_ |
this laptop gets ~20FPS at abseloute minimum settings |
| 02:36 |
repetitivestrain |
but anyway even an "Intel J5005" will outperform the Westmere xeons where people attempt to host minetest servers |
| 02:36 |
user333_ |
both on windows XP and debian 12 |
| 02:36 |
cheapie |
Keep in mind that iGPU is only about half as fast as a GeForce 210, and that CPU struggles to keep it fed |
| 02:36 |
repetitivestrain |
it's an atom from 2017 |
| 02:36 |
repetitivestrain |
and it'll consume a quarter, if not less, of the energy required by the westmeres to do so |
| 02:36 |
user333_ |
actually, this laptop was fairly decent as a MTG server and even a CTF server for 2-3 ppl |
| 02:37 |
repetitivestrain |
the Atom N270? |
| 02:37 |
user333_ |
and i was able to boot windows 11 in a VM on it o_O |
| 02:37 |
repetitivestrain |
well that just bespeaks how unsophisticated MTG is |
| 02:37 |
user333_ |
repetitivestrain: yes |
| 02:37 |
repetitivestrain |
try installing 100 mods |
| 02:37 |
user333_ |
mesecons alone will do it |
| 02:38 |
repetitivestrain |
well, i digress |
| 02:38 |
repetitivestrain |
mtg alone is not so much a game as it is a relic |
| 02:38 |
user333_ |
the only thing this laptop is good for is chatting on IRC and playing videos in 720p... |
| 02:38 |
user333_ |
and maybe a MT server |
| 02:39 |
user333_ |
it also was able to run half-life near perfectly in windows so maybe a retro gaming laptop |
| 02:43 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> You can probably play youtube videos in 1080p if you try hard enough. The trick is to not use a web browser to watch the videos. |
| 02:44 |
cheapie |
I should see if I can get a modern Luanti server running on the SiS 550 sometime, see if that can even host plain MTG reasonably |
| 02:44 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> On Debian, there is a program called smtube that's a dedicated browser for youtube videos. When you click on a video, it downloads it with yt-dlp and plays it in mpv. |
| 02:44 |
user333_ |
it was barely able to play 720p at 30FPS from an MP4, i don't think so |
| 02:45 |
cheapie |
It's the one where you just *know* it'll be all sorts of fun when not even CPU-Z recognizes it |
| 02:45 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> With the right setup, it's almost certainly possible. |
| 02:45 |
user333_ |
the screen is only 720p so there's no point anyway XD |
| 02:45 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> The trick is to make sure nothing else is running, and that the video gets cached as much as possible. |
| 02:46 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> Higher-res videos are given higher max bitrates, so there could be benefits if you're watching a videow ith a lot of motion. |
| 02:46 |
user333_ |
it was at 80% CPU usage playing with mpv in 720p at 30FPS with nothing else open |
| 02:47 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> Maybe that computer really is that bad. I can't say for sure, as I've never seen it in person. |
| 02:48 |
user333_ |
and yet it was able to boot windows 11 in a VM... |
| 02:48 |
user333_ |
took an hour though |
| 02:48 |
MTDiscord |
<nathan4220776> But I've played videos in 1080p on computers from the early 2000s with the trick that I described. |
| 02:50 |
user333_ |
yeah i don't think it will work on this... it was considered low-end at the time |
| 02:50 |
user333_ |
i might try overclocking it to ~2GHz and see if it works then |
