05:19 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> imagine not adhering strictly to ISO 8601, which specifies a T to separate the date from the time. Actualyl.. it uses colons, which need URL escaping. Can't win /shrug
05:21 MTDiscord <wsor4035> time is evil

14:59 cheapie Blockhead256: But we already have MTG and devtest, what more could you want? :P
14:59 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> uhh, Minetest Classic?
14:59 cheapie I guess
15:03 cheapie So I'm sure this will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, but trying to join VE-C on a box with 2GiB of RAM and a slow hard drive from 2006 does not result in a good experience
15:03 cheapie 4GiB is kinda alright though
15:04 user333_ try an older OS and MT version
15:05 cheapie But that would actually work well, and that's boring :P
15:05 cheapie TBH it would help if I wasn't running the whole mess in KDE Plasma too
15:11 Sheriff_U3 If your comfortable with Linux I would give AntiX a try. I have never seen a lighter OS with a gui.
15:12 cheapie It already is running Linux :P
15:12 Sheriff_U3 https://antixlinux.com/
15:12 cheapie The goal was just to see what would happen, not to build a useful system
15:12 Sheriff_U3 ph
15:12 Sheriff_U3 *oh
15:12 cheapie Like... I'm currently typing on this:
15:12 cheapie Client: HexChat 2.16.2 • OS: Debian forky/sid • CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 w/ Radeon 860M (1.84GHz) • Memory: Physical: 11.1 GiB Total (7.3 GiB Free) Swap: 13.7 GiB Total (12.6 GiB Free) • Storage: 47.2 GB / 235.3 GB (188.2 GB Free) • Uptime: 1w 4d 11h 4m 31s
15:13 cheapie and my desktop is beefier than that. I have decent computers to use instead, for things like that :P
15:13 Sheriff_U3 lol, that's some good specs.
15:13 Sheriff_U3 these are mine:

15:14 cheapie ^ desktop
15:14 cheapie The laptop actually has better single-thread performance than the desktop, but the desktop wins on pretty much everything else
15:15 Sheriff_U3 Yours are definitely newer, mine is from 2013...
15:15 cheapie Yeah, this laptop is from earlier this year and that desktop is a combination of mostly-new-ish parts
15:17 cheapie I think the oldest part in it might be the OS installation, originally installed in mid-2016 and it's been transplanted a ton of times
15:18 Sheriff_U3 lol, I switched HD's a couple months ago and decided to just install fresh instead of transplanting
15:19 cheapie I've switched SSDs a few times in that thing
15:19 cheapie That 21TB it mentions is currently a 1TB SSD + 20TB HDD
15:22 user333_ there's actually a linux distro lighter than AntiX
15:22 cheapie I'm sure there are plenty
15:23 Sheriff_U3 what is it? (besides a server distro)
15:23 user333_ not many cram a full DE into 17mb
15:23 user333_ http://www.tinycorelinux.net/
15:23 user333_ 11MB for full CLI, 17MB for a DE, and ~250MB for more software
15:24 user333_ "It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access."
15:24 cheapie user333_: I have an SSD that's perfect for that :P https://cheapiesystems.com/media/images/P_20200102_162852.jpg
15:25 Sheriff_U3 I think that that distro is a bit on the dead side though.
15:25 user333_ my idea was to put TinyCore + a custom luanti appimage + a few scripts to make LuantiOS, a bootable ISO that has fullscreen luanti on startup
15:26 Sheriff_U3 lol
15:26 user333_ because why not
15:26 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> you know what to do with it?
15:26 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> make apps in it as games
15:26 cheapie user333_: Does TC even ship support for any 3D acceleration, or are you going for the "llvmpipe ought to be enough for anybody" strategy?
15:26 Sheriff_U3 surprising
15:27 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> bundle no other applications other than commandline or whatever
15:27 user333_ no idea.
15:27 Sheriff_U3 the forums for it are still up
15:27 Sheriff_U3 with recent msgs
15:27 [MatrxMT] <Blockhead256> heard of that before, the modern Linux "PC booter"
15:27 user333_ i'm running it in a basic VM so there will be no 3d acceleration whatsoever
15:27 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> slideshow mode on
15:27 user333_ seconds per frame
15:28 cheapie I find Luanti to usually be at least marginally playable with llvmpipe
15:28 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> wish luanti had more people... but then you would lose the sense of "close-knit community" and have people trying to cashgrab stuff
15:29 user333_ compared to other games, luanti is very lightweight, yes
15:29 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> lightweight, but singlethreaded so one thread on the cpu just gets bombarded
15:29 cheapie It looks like ass and the textures are a blurry mess, but with the same settings I usually use here, I can get ~20 FPS in devtest with llvmpipe, view range 200
15:30 user333_ tbh that's not bad
15:30 user333_ software rendering ftw...
15:30 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> how much do you get if you turn off hud, or look at the sky
15:30 cheapie Looking straight up gets me 60 FPS
15:30 cheapie (capped at that, 60Hz monitor)
15:31 user333_ 5.15.0-dev removed that cap
15:31 cheapie Yeah, but I still have it enabled and can't be bothered to play with settings right now
15:31 user333_ though all my monitors are 60hz as well so it doesnt matter :c
15:31 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> why was vsync eternally on
15:32 user333_ my main PC now gets 700 FPS in MT thanks to that fix
15:32 cheapie Still better than that one time I tried Quake II RTX with RT on and software rendering, that "worked" in 640x480 and did a whole 10 frames per... day
15:32 user333_ nothing beats the time i got over 10k FPS in one of the Irrlicht demos
15:33 MTDiscord <wsor4035> with the null driver?
15:33 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> congrats on getting 0.12mFPS
15:33 [MatrxMT] <birdlover32767> beats my record for sure
15:33 cheapie I screwed around with some old ATI Radeon 9000-series demos on modern hardware once, it was kind of funny running Fraps (which does work in Proton too) and seeing it just pegged at "999"
15:33 user333_ with opengl iirc, though software rendering got over 500 FPS
15:35 * user333_ has to go
15:35 cheapie https://cheapiesystems.com/media/images/Screenshot%20at%202024-10-12%2017-26-52.png (top left)
15:35 cheapie Mesa overlay has more digits: https://cheapiesystems.com/media/images/Screenshot%20at%202024-10-12%2017-19-52.png
15:36 cheapie 3DMark2001 SE also properly handles >=1kFPS in the car chase test (the one where it shows the FPS on-screen in a HUD thing), it caps the displayed FPS at 999 but does log the real value

16:19 Krock found a CPU with 3 digits. Spoiler: It's old.
16:22 cheapie I have a 386SX-16 but I don't think Luanti is going to run on that any time soon
16:32 cheapie The photo enforced roundabout in Bonnthal is back: https://cheapiesystems.com/media/2025-12-25%2010-29-29.webm
16:34 cheapie There's just a (digilines) player detector under the center island, it's connected to a Luacontroller that both turns the flash under the camera on and off and triggers command blocks that place and remove a bunch of maptools:lightbulb (using a VoxelManip, because why not)
16:52 cheapie Some very slight edits to that escalator (removed some code that didn't do anything when used as intended, but was making launching more difficult) and now I can launch over 1km: https://cheapiesystems.com/media/2025-12-25%2010-46-49.webm
